Blending Sounds — Making Words

Memory Verse "From infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures." — 2 Timothy 3:15 (NIV)

Learning Objective

Students will practice blending consonant and vowel sounds to read simple three-letter words.

Lesson Content

Now that you know vowels and consonants, let's put sounds together to make words! This is called blending.

Let's try! Say 'ccc' then 'aaa' then 'ttt' — now put them together fast: cat! You just read a word! God is helping you learn to read!

Let's try more: d-o-g is dog! S-u-n is sun! G-o-d is God! M-o-m is Mom! D-a-d is Dad!

When you blend sounds together, you are reading! Soon you will be able to read words from the Bible all by yourself!

Hands-On Activity

Use letter cards or write letters on paper. Practice blending these words: cat, dog, sun, God, hat, red, big, run. Point to each letter, say its sound, then blend them together to read the word!
