Fish — Swimmers of the Deep

Memory Verse "So God created the great sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarm, according to their kinds." — Genesis 1:21 (ESV)

Learning Objective

Students will learn about the amazing design of fish and sea creatures and how God equipped them to live underwater.

Lesson Content

On Day 5, God also filled the oceans, rivers, and lakes with fish and sea creatures. Fish are cold-blooded animals that breathe through special organs called gills. God designed gills to take oxygen right out of the water — what an amazing design!

Fish have scales that protect their bodies and fins that help them swim, turn, and stop. Many fish have a special organ called a swim bladder that helps them float at just the right depth. God thought of everything when He created fish!

There are so many different kinds of fish — from tiny guppies to huge whale sharks. Clownfish live safely among stinging sea anemones. Salmon can swim thousands of miles to return to the exact river where they were born. Pufferfish can puff up like a balloon to scare away enemies. Each of these amazing abilities was designed by God.

Hands-On Activity

Draw an underwater scene with at least three different kinds of fish. Label the fins, scales, and gills on one of the fish. Color your scene to show the beauty of God's underwater creation.

Discussion Questions

  • How are fish different from mammals?
  • What special features did God give fish to help them live in water?
  • Can you name some different kinds of fish? What makes each one special?
