Laws That Protect Us — Rules for a Good Society

Memory Verse "Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established." — Romans 13:1 (NIV)

Learning Objective

Students will learn why we have laws, how laws keep us safe, and how God's laws are the foundation for good rules.

Lesson Content

Laws are rules that everyone in a community or country must follow. Laws help keep us safe and make sure everyone is treated fairly. Without laws, people could do whatever they wanted, and that would be very dangerous.

God gave us the first laws in the Bible. The Ten Commandments teach us to love God and love our neighbors. Many of America's laws are based on these Biblical principles — like laws against stealing, lying, and hurting others.

We have many kinds of laws. Traffic laws tell us to stop at red lights so people don't get hurt. School rules help everyone learn in a safe place. Laws against stealing protect our belongings.

Police officers, judges, and other leaders help make sure laws are followed. They work to keep our neighborhoods safe. The Bible tells us to respect these leaders because God puts them in charge to protect us and keep order.

Hands-On Activity

Make a list of five rules or laws that keep you safe (at home, at school, or in your community). Next to each one, write why that rule is important.

Discussion Questions

  • Why do we need laws and rules?
  • How are God's laws like our country's laws?
