Our Freedoms — God-Given Rights

Memory Verse "Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom." — 2 Corinthians 3:17 (NIV)

Learning Objective

Students will learn about the important freedoms Americans enjoy and understand that these rights come from God.

Lesson Content

Americans enjoy many special freedoms that people in some other countries do not have. Our Founding Fathers believed these freedoms come from God, not from the government.

Freedom of religion means we can worship God however we choose. No one can tell us we cannot pray or read our Bible. This was one of the main reasons the Pilgrims came to America!

Freedom of speech means we can share our ideas and talk about what we believe. Freedom of the press means newspapers and books can print the truth. These freedoms help us share God's truth with others.

These freedoms are written in the Bill of Rights, which is part of our Constitution. The Founders knew that God created all people with certain rights, and they wanted to make sure those rights were protected forever. We should thank God every day for the freedom we enjoy in America.

Hands-On Activity

Draw three pictures showing freedoms you enjoy: one of your family at church, one of you reading a book, and one of you sharing your ideas. Label each picture with the freedom it shows.
