Research Skills — Seeking Truth and Knowledge

Memory Verse "It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; to search out a matter is the glory of kings." — Proverbs 25:2 (NIV)

Learning Objective

Students will learn how to research a topic using multiple sources, take notes, and present findings in an organized written report.

Lesson Content

Research means carefully investigating a topic to learn the truth about it. Good researchers ask questions, find reliable sources, take organized notes, and present their findings clearly.

Reliable sources include books by knowledgeable authors, encyclopedias, educational websites, and interviews with experts. Always check that your sources are trustworthy and accurate. The Bible is the ultimate source of truth.

When taking notes, write key facts in your own words — don't copy word for word. Organize your notes by subtopic. Use note cards or a graphic organizer to keep track of where each fact came from.

A research report has an introduction that states your topic, body paragraphs that present your findings with details, and a conclusion that summarizes what you learned. Always give credit to your sources.

Hands-On Activity

Choose a topic related to God's creation (an animal, a planet, a biome, or a Bible-era civilization). Find information from at least two sources. Take notes on index cards, then write a short research report with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion.

Discussion Questions

  • How do you know if a source is reliable?
  • Why is it important to use your own words when taking notes?
  • How is researching a topic an act of glorifying God?
