5th Grade Mathematics — Pre-Algebra Foundations — Order in God's Creation
Students will learn and apply the order of operations (PEMDAS) to evaluate expressions correctly.
When a math problem has more than one operation, we must follow a specific order so everyone gets the same answer. This is called the Order of Operations, often remembered as PEMDAS.
PEMDAS stands for: Parentheses first, then Exponents, then Multiplication and Division (left to right), then Addition and Subtraction (left to right).
For example, 3 + 4 × 2 = 3 + 8 = 11 (not 14). We multiply before we add. But (3 + 4) × 2 = 7 × 2 = 14 because parentheses come first.
God is a God of order, not confusion. Just as He established order in creation — light before plants, plants before animals — He built order into mathematics. Following the rules carefully gives us the right answer every time.
Evaluate these expressions using PEMDAS: (1) 8 + 2 × 5, (2) (8 + 2) × 5, (3) 12 ÷ 4 + 3 × 2, (4) 20 - (3 + 7) × 2. Create a colorful poster showing the PEMDAS steps.
