Proverbs and Character — Building a Godly Life

Memory Verse "A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold." — Proverbs 22:1 (NIV)

Learning Objective

Students will study proverbs about character traits and understand how wisdom shapes who we become.

Lesson Content

Proverbs teaches that character — who you really are on the inside — matters more than anything you own. Proverbs 22:1 says a good reputation is worth more than great riches. Our character is built by the choices we make every day.

Proverbs highlights many character traits God values: diligence (hard work), honesty, self-control, generosity, humility, and kindness. Proverbs 6:6-8 tells us to learn from the ant, which works hard without needing anyone to tell it what to do.

Proverbs also warns against character flaws: laziness, pride, gossip, anger, and dishonesty. Proverbs 16:18 warns, 'Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.' These warnings help us avoid pitfalls in life.

The Proverbs 31 woman is described as strong, hardworking, wise, generous, and God-fearing. She is an example for everyone — not just women — of what it looks like to build a life of godly character. 'Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised' (Proverbs 31:30).

Hands-On Activity

Create a 'Character Builder' booklet. On each page, write a proverb about a different character trait (diligence, honesty, humility, kindness, self-control). Draw a picture showing that trait in action and write one way you can practice it this week.
