Research Skills — Finding Truth in Books and the Bible

Memory Verse "It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; to search out a matter is the glory of kings." — Proverbs 25:2 (NIV)

Learning Objective

Students will learn basic research skills including using a table of contents, index, glossary, and Bible concordance to find information.

Lesson Content

God wants us to be seekers of truth. Proverbs tells us that searching out answers is a noble task. Good research skills help us find the information we need and test whether what we read is true.

A table of contents is found at the front of a book. It lists the chapters or sections and the page numbers where they begin. This helps you find topics quickly.

An index is found at the back of a book. It lists important words and topics in alphabetical order with page numbers. An index is more detailed than a table of contents.

A glossary is like a small dictionary at the back of a book. It defines important words used in the book. When you come across a word you do not know, check the glossary first.

A Bible concordance is a special tool that helps you find verses about a specific topic or word. If you want to find every verse about 'faith' or 'love,' a concordance will list them all. This is one of the most valuable research tools for studying God's Word.

When doing research, always check your sources. The Bible is our ultimate source of truth. Other books and resources should be measured against what Scripture teaches.

Hands-On Activity

Using a Bible concordance (printed or online), look up the word 'wisdom.' Find three verses about wisdom, write them down, and write one sentence explaining what each verse teaches us about wisdom.

Discussion Questions

  • Why is it important to know how to find information in books?
  • How is a Bible concordance different from a regular index?
  • Why should we always compare what we read to what the Bible says?
