What Is a Fraction? — Understanding Parts of a Whole

Memory Verse "Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ." — 1 Corinthians 12:12 (NIV)

Learning Objective

Students will learn what fractions are, identify numerators and denominators, and understand how fractions represent parts of a whole.

Lesson Content

A fraction is a way to show a part of a whole. When you cut a pizza into 4 equal slices and eat 1 slice, you have eaten 1/4 (one-fourth) of the pizza. Fractions help us describe things that are divided into equal parts.

Every fraction has two numbers. The top number is called the numerator — it tells how many parts you have. The bottom number is called the denominator — it tells how many equal parts the whole is divided into. In the fraction 3/8, the numerator is 3 and the denominator is 8.

Fractions are all around us! When the Bible talks about tithing one-tenth (1/10) of what we earn, that is a fraction. When we share something equally among friends, we use fractions. God designed a world full of order and mathematics.

Just as the body of Christ has many parts that make one whole (1 Corinthians 12:12), fractions show us how many parts come together to make a whole. Each part is important, whether it is 1/2, 1/4, or 1/8 of the whole.

Hands-On Activity

Fold a piece of paper into halves, then fourths, then eighths. Label each section with the correct fraction. Color different amounts and write the fraction that is colored. For example, color 3 out of 8 sections and write 3/8.

Discussion Questions

  • Where do you see fractions in everyday life?
  • Why is it important that the parts of a fraction are equal?
  • How is the body of Christ like a fraction — many parts making one whole?
