Community Service — Loving Your Neighbor in Action

Memory Verse "Love your neighbor as yourself." — Matthew 22:39 (NIV)

Learning Objective

Students will learn how community service reflects Biblical values and explore ways they can serve their neighborhoods and communities.

Lesson Content

Jesus taught that the second greatest commandment is to 'love your neighbor as yourself.' One of the best ways to put this commandment into action is through community service — helping others without expecting anything in return.

Community service means doing things to make your neighborhood, town, or city a better place. It can be as simple as picking up trash at a park, visiting someone who is lonely, or collecting food for a food bank.

Throughout American history, communities have been built on the idea of neighbors helping neighbors. The early settlers worked together to build barns, harvest crops, and care for the sick. This spirit of service is part of America's Christian heritage.

When we serve others, we are following Jesus' example. He said, 'For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many' (Mark 10:45). If Jesus served others, how much more should we?

Community service also helps us develop important character traits like compassion, generosity, and humility. It teaches us to think about others instead of only thinking about ourselves.

Hands-On Activity

Plan a community service project with your family. Choose one of the following: write cards for nursing home residents, organize a neighborhood clean-up, collect supplies for a local shelter, or bake treats for a neighbor. Write about your experience afterward.
