3rd Grade Mathematics — Multiplication and Division — God's Order in Numbers
Students will memorize multiplication facts for 0 through 5 and recognize patterns in the times tables.
Learning your times tables is like storing treasures in your mind. Just as we memorize Scripture to keep God's Word in our hearts, we memorize multiplication facts to become skilled in math.
The 0 times table is easy: anything multiplied by 0 equals 0. The 1 times table is also simple: anything multiplied by 1 stays the same. God designed numbers with these helpful rules to make math easier.
The 2 times table is skip counting by 2: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20. Notice the pattern — every answer is an even number! The 5 times table follows a pattern too: every answer ends in 0 or 5.
The 3 and 4 times tables take more practice. For 3s, try: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30. For 4s, notice that each answer is double the 2s times table! 4 × 3 = 12 is the same as 2 × 3 doubled (6 + 6 = 12).
Here is a wonderful property God built into multiplication: the order does not matter! 3 × 4 equals the same as 4 × 3. This is called the commutative property, and it cuts your memorizing work almost in half.
Make multiplication flashcards for facts 0 through 5. Practice with a partner. Then fill in a times table chart from 0 × 0 to 5 × 10. Color patterns you discover.
