Why Do We Need Government?

Memory Verse "Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established." — Romans 13:1 (NIV)

Learning Objective

Students will understand that God designed government to keep order, protect people, and promote justice.

Lesson Content

Imagine a baseball game with no rules and no umpire. Players could run anywhere, steal bases whenever they wanted, and nobody would know who won. It would be chaos! That is why we need rules — and that is why we need government.

Government is the system of leaders and laws that helps a community, state, or country run smoothly. The Bible teaches that God created the idea of government. He wants people to live in peace and treat each other fairly.

In the Bible, God gave Moses laws for the people of Israel. These laws taught people to be honest, to respect each other, and to worship God. Many of America's laws are based on these same Biblical ideas of right and wrong.

Without government, stronger people could take advantage of weaker people. Government helps protect everyone's rights and makes sure people are treated justly. Good government serves the people, just as Jesus taught us to serve others.

Hands-On Activity

With your class or family, make a list of five rules you think are important for your home or classroom. Discuss why each rule is needed and how it helps everyone.
