King Solomon — The Wisest King

Memory Verse "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you." — James 1:5 (NIV)

Learning Objective

Students will learn how Solomon asked God for wisdom and understand that we can ask God for wisdom too.

Lesson Content

After David died, his son Solomon became king. God appeared to Solomon in a dream and said, 'Ask for whatever you want me to give you.' Solomon could have asked for money, power, or a long life.

Instead, Solomon asked for wisdom to lead God's people well. God was so pleased with this request that He gave Solomon not only great wisdom but also riches and honor that no other king would ever match.

Solomon's wisdom became famous throughout the world. The Queen of Sheba traveled a great distance just to test his wisdom with hard questions. She was amazed and praised the God of Israel for placing such a wise man on the throne.

Solomon built a magnificent temple for God in Jerusalem. It took seven years to build and was covered in gold. When it was finished, God's glory filled the temple like a cloud. It was one of the most important events in Israel's history.

Sadly, in his later years, Solomon turned away from God by marrying many foreign wives who worshiped idols. His story reminds us that wisdom is a gift that must be used faithfully throughout our whole lives.

Hands-On Activity

Make a list of five situations where you need wisdom (like choosing friends, solving a problem, or making decisions). Write a prayer asking God for wisdom in each situation.
