Vowel Teams — Two Vowels Working Together

Memory Verse "Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor." — Ecclesiastes 4:9 (NIV)

Learning Objective

Students will learn common vowel teams (ai, ea, oa, ee, oo) and how two vowels work together to make one sound.

Lesson Content

Sometimes two vowels sit next to each other in a word. When they do, they often work together to make one sound. We call these vowel teams.

Here is a helpful rule: when two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking! In the word 'rain,' the a and i are a team. The a says its name, and the i is silent. R-AI-N says rain.

Common vowel teams include: AI (rain, train, wait), EA (read, team, clean), OA (boat, coat, road), EE (tree, feet, green), and OO (moon, food, zoo).

The Bible tells us that two are better than one. Just like people work better together, vowel teams work together to make reading easier!

Hands-On Activity

Make a vowel team chart with five columns (ai, ea, oa, ee, oo). Find and write at least 3 words for each vowel team. Then write sentences using your favorite vowel team words.

Discussion Questions

  • Can you think of more words with the 'ea' vowel team?
  • Why do you think two vowels working together is like the Bible verse about teamwork?
  • What vowel team do you see most often when you read?
