Reading Fluency — Reading Smoothly and With Expression

Memory Verse "Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path." — Psalm 119:105 (NIV)

Learning Objective

Students will practice reading fluently — smoothly, accurately, and with expression — using Bible passages and stories.

Lesson Content

Fluency means reading smoothly, like talking. When you read fluently, you don't stop and start between every word. The words flow together naturally.

Good readers also read with expression. That means your voice goes up when there is a question mark, gets excited with an exclamation point, and pauses at commas and periods.

To build fluency, practice reading the same passage several times. Each time you read it, try to read a little smoother and with more expression.

Reading God's Word is one of the best ways to practice reading! The Bible is full of wonderful stories, beautiful poems, and important lessons. The more we read it, the better readers we become — and the more we learn about God.

Hands-On Activity

Choose a favorite Bible verse or short passage (like Psalm 23:1-3). Read it aloud three times. The first time, focus on reading every word correctly. The second time, read more smoothly. The third time, add expression!
