Place Value — Ones, Tens, and Hundreds

Memory Verse "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." — Genesis 1:1 (NIV)

Learning Objective

Students will understand place value for ones, tens, and hundreds, and how God uses order in all of creation.

Lesson Content

Every number is made up of digits, and each digit has a special place. The place tells us how much that digit is worth.

In the number 345, the 5 is in the ones place (worth 5), the 4 is in the tens place (worth 40), and the 3 is in the hundreds place (worth 300).

Just like God put everything in its right place during creation, every digit has its right place in a number. When we understand place value, we can read and write numbers up to 999!

Let's practice: In the number 276, the 6 is in the ones place, the 7 is in the tens place, and the 2 is in the hundreds place. So 276 = 200 + 70 + 6.

Hands-On Activity

Use blocks or small objects to build numbers. Group 10 ones into a ten, and 10 tens into a hundred. Build the numbers 153, 247, and 389 using your groups.

Discussion Questions

  • Why is it important that each digit has its own place?
  • How does understanding place value help us count bigger numbers?
  • How is God's order in creation like the order in our number system?
