2nd Grade Mathematics — Building with Numbers — Place Value and Measurement
Students will learn to add two-digit numbers with regrouping (carrying) and understand why regrouping works.
Sometimes when we add numbers, the ones column adds up to 10 or more. When that happens, we need to regroup — we carry a ten to the tens column.
Let's try 47 + 35. First, add the ones: 7 + 5 = 12. Since 12 is more than 9, we write the 2 in the ones place and carry the 1 to the tens column.
Next, add the tens: 4 + 3 + 1 (the carried ten) = 8. So 47 + 35 = 82!
God gives us wisdom to solve problems step by step. Regrouping is like organizing — we put things in the right place so our answer is correct.
Practice these addition problems with regrouping: 28 + 14, 56 + 37, 49 + 23, 65 + 18, and 77 + 15. Use base-ten blocks to check your work.
