National Symbols — The Eagle, the Bell, and More

Memory Verse "But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles." — Isaiah 40:31 (NIV)

Learning Objective

Students will learn about important American symbols like the bald eagle, the Liberty Bell, and the Statue of Liberty.

Lesson Content

America has many special symbols that remind us of our country's history and values. A symbol is something that stands for something else.

The bald eagle is America's national bird. It was chosen because it is strong, brave, and free — just like our country. The Bible talks about eagles soaring high, and our nation was built to soar with God's help.

The Liberty Bell is in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It rang when the Declaration of Independence was announced in 1776. The bell has a Bible verse on it: 'Proclaim liberty throughout all the land' (Leviticus 25:10). The bell cracked long ago but is still a powerful symbol of freedom.

The Statue of Liberty stands in New York Harbor. She holds a torch of freedom high in the air. She welcomed millions of people who came to America looking for freedom and a new life. These symbols remind us that God has blessed America with liberty.
