David — A Heart After God

Memory Verse "The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart." — 1 Samuel 16:7 (NIV)

Learning Objective

Students will learn about David the shepherd boy who became king and understand that God cares about our hearts more than our outward appearance.

Lesson Content

David was the youngest son of Jesse. He was just a shepherd boy who watched over his father's sheep. But God saw something special in David — he had a heart that loved God.

When the prophet Samuel came to Jesse's family to choose the next king, everyone thought God would pick one of David's older, taller brothers. But God told Samuel, 'The Lord looks at the heart.' God chose David!

Before David became king, he faced a giant named Goliath. Goliath was over nine feet tall and wore heavy armor. All the soldiers of Israel were afraid of him. But young David trusted God.

David said to Goliath, 'You come against me with sword and spear, but I come against you in the name of the Lord!' David used a sling and a single stone, and God helped him defeat the giant. David showed that with God, even the smallest person can do great things.

Hands-On Activity

Draw two pictures: one of David as a shepherd boy with his sheep, and one of David facing Goliath. Write the memory verse between the two pictures.
