Understanding What We Read — Comprehension Skills

Memory Verse "They read from the Book of the Law of God, making it clear... so that the people understood." — Nehemiah 8:8 (NIV)

Learning Objective

Students will practice reading comprehension by identifying the main idea, characters, and events in a short passage.

Lesson Content

Reading is not just saying the words — it is understanding what the words mean! Good readers think about what they are reading.

When you read a story, ask yourself: Who is in the story? What happened? Where did it take place? These questions help you understand.

Let's practice with a Bible story: 'David was a young shepherd boy. He watched over his father's sheep. One day a lion came. David was brave and trusted God. He fought the lion and saved his sheep.' Who is the story about? David! What happened? He saved his sheep from a lion!

Hands-On Activity

Read a short Bible passage together. Then answer: Who is in the story? What happened first, next, and last? Draw a picture of the main event. Write one sentence about the story.

Discussion Questions

  • What questions should we ask when reading a story?
