Taking Away — Learning to Subtract

Memory Verse "Give, and it will be given to you." — Luke 6:38 (NIV)

Learning Objective

Students will learn the concept of subtraction as taking away and practice subtracting numbers within 10.

Lesson Content

Subtraction means taking away. When we share and give to others, we are subtracting from what we have. Jesus tells us that giving is good!

If you have 5 grapes and you eat 2, how many are left? 5 - 2 = 3. The minus sign (-) means 'take away.'

Let's try more: 7 - 3 = 4. 9 - 5 = 4. 6 - 1 = 5. When we subtract, the number gets smaller.

Hands-On Activity

Start with 10 blocks. Take away different amounts and write the subtraction sentence each time. Example: 10 - 3 = 7. Try at least five subtraction problems.

Discussion Questions

  • What does the minus sign mean?
  • If you had 8 cookies and gave 3 to a friend, how many would you have left?
