Why We Have Rules — God's Gift of Order

Memory Verse "Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established." — Romans 13:1 (NIV)

Learning Objective

Students will learn why rules are important and that God gave us rules to keep us safe and happy.

Lesson Content

Rules are instructions that tell us what to do and what not to do. We have rules at home, at school, and in our town.

God gave us the very first rules. The Ten Commandments are rules from God that help us love Him and love other people.

Rules keep us safe. When we follow the rule to look both ways before crossing the street, we stay safe. When we take turns, everyone gets a chance.

Good rules are like a gift from God. They help our families, schools, and communities work well and keep everyone happy.

Hands-On Activity

Make a list of 5 rules you follow at home or school. Draw a picture of yourself following one of the rules.

Discussion Questions

  • What are some rules you follow at home?
  • Why does God want us to have rules?
  • What would happen if there were no rules?
